Shevchenko's career has been highlighted by many awards, the most prestigious of which were the Ballon d'Or in 2004 (becoming the third Ukrainian, after Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov to receive it) and the UEFA Champions League in 2003 with Milan. Along with this, he has won various league and cup titles in Ukraine, Italy, and England. Besides the Golden Ball, Shevchenko was awarded other individual awards.

He scored seventeen goals in the 2004–05 season after missing several games with a fractured cheekbone. Shevchenko made Champions League history the following season; on 23 November 2005, he scored all four goals in Milan's 4–0 group-stage drubbing of Fenerbahçe, becoming only the fifth player to accomplish this feat (his company includes Marco van Basten, Simone Inzaghi, Dado Pršo and Ruud van Nistelrooy; Lionel Messi joined that group in the 2009–10 season as well). Milan eventually lost the tournament when Shevchenko missed the crucial penalty in the final against Liverpool. In the 2005-06 season, he scored his last Milan goal in the second leg of the quarterfinals as they eliminated Olympique Lyonnais after a last-minute comeback, but then fell to eventual winners Barcelona in the semifinals, a match where Shevchenko controversially had a last minute equalizer denied by the referee. Despite this, he still ended up being the top scorer of the whole competition with 9 goals in 12 games.

Shevchenko has 100 caps and 45 goals for the Ukrainian national team, whom he represented at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He scored his first international goal in May 1996, in a friendly against Turkey.

In March 2000, Dynamo manager Valeri Lobanovsky became the Ukraine coach, with the aim to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals. Shevchenko scored 10 goals in the qualifiers, but Ukraine failed to qualify after losing a play-off against Germany. He scored a total of five goals in Ukraine's Euro 2008 qualifying round.

After only playing two games for Milan in the 2008-2009 season, there was a lot of speculation of Shevchenko being past his best but he silenced his critics after scoring an equaliser in an 2010 World Cup qualifying match against England at the Wembley Stadium, however Ukraine went on to lose the game 2–1 after his former Chelsea teammate John Terry had scored from a corner kick.

In a 21 December 2009 interview with UEFA Shevchenko declared that he was keen to play in his home country at Euro 2012. "After a disappointing 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign that is my new challenge, or even dream. I will do everything to achieve that."

Shevchenko is married to American model Kristen Pazik. The couple met at a Giorgio Armani afterparty in 2002, and married on 14 July 2004 in a private ceremony on a golf course in Washington, DC. They communicate with each other in Italian, though Shevchenko had previously made public his desire to learn English. After his return to Dynamo Kyiv in August 2009 the couple declared that they want their children to learn Ukrainian

Daniela Hantuchova

Daniela Hantuchová (born April 23, 1983) is a Slovak professional tennis player. She turned professional in 1999 and had her breakthrough year in 2002, when she won her first Tier I tournament and ended the year in the top ten. She is currently coached by Larri Passos.

Her WTA Tour mentor in the "Partners for Success" program was Martina Navrátilová, who was her doubles partner for a brief period in early 2005. As of January 10, 2011, Hantuchová is ranked World No. 31 in singles.Hantuchová speaks three languages (Slovak, English and German),and was trained as a classical pianist.She is thought to be a perfectionist and puts a lot of pressure on herself during her training.She qualified for university in Slovakia but deferred it to pursue tennis.She appeared in the 2009 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition alongside Maria Kirilenko and Tatiana Golovin in a pictoral entitled Volley of the Dolls.

Hantuchová withdrew from her first tournament of the year at the Brisbane International due to a left Achilles strain.She was healthy enough to compete at the Medibank International Sydney but suffered a loss to María José Martínez Sánchez in the first round 6–2, 6–4. At the Australian Open she was the 28th seed, but lost in the first round to Regina Kulikova in an epic three-setter, 7–5, 3–6, 9–7. This is the first time Hantuchová has lost in the first round of the Australian Open, bar her first appearance.Hantuchová can be characterized as an aggressive all-arounder, with the use of "effortless" power and long fluid strokes. Her strengths within her game are definitely seenas her serve, backhand, forehand and ability to hit volleys with the deftest of touch.Weaknesses of Hantuchová's game are her movement around the court, which has improved within the last couple of years, and her mental fragility – this has been a factor in many matches in her career, from her second round losses at the French Open and Wimbledon in 2003 to her 2004 final in Eastbourne, to the 2008 Australian Open semi-final and her fourth round match at the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open to name but a few.Hantuchová's serve has always been considered as a weapon as she is able to vary speed, placement and spin. One part of her serve that has been commented on is that she has often changed the motion of her serve – for reasons unknown.Towards the beginning of her career she had a very large and fluid action but started to become more and more abbreviated from the season of 2004, which at times was quite unsuccessful and less effective. She then had a successful abbreviated motion from the beginning of 2007 but after an injury lay-off during the 2008 clay court season she returned to Wimbledon with a larger follow through. Again, in 2009 she went to her current and most abbreviated service motion to date.

Li Na

Li Na (born February 26, 1982) is a Chinese professional tennis player.

As of January 31, 2011, she is ranked as No. 7 in the world according to the Women's Tennis Association singles rankings, her career high. She has won four WTA and nineteen ITF titles. At the 2011 Australian Open, Li Na became China's first Grand Slam singles finalist player.

From the central China metropolis of Wuhan, Li was a badminton player when she was 6 years old but her coach kept noticing that she looked as if she were playing tennis. By the time she was 8, her coach asked her parents if she could switch to tennis, which she did at the age of 9.

Between 1999 and 2004, Li won 20 women's singles titles: 19 ITF events and one—the first ever won by a Chinese woman—on the WTA Tour. In January 2008, she won her second WTA Tour title after a drought of over three and a quarter years.

She is noted in her playing style for quick reflexes and athleticism around the court and fast groundstrokes which she scatters unpredictably to all corners of the playing surface.

Li also frequently enters doubles tournaments at events alongside singles, and has won two WTA doubles titles and 16 further ITF doubles events. Her early success in doubles came mostly with Li Ting; but more recently she has made a habit of forming temporary women's doubles partnerships with players with whom she has previously enjoyed a healthy rivalry through repeated head-to-head meetings in singles tournaments, notably Liu Nan-Nan, Nicole Pratt, Yan Zi, Jelena Janković, and Peng Shuai.

Her career has been plagued by injuries that have interrupted her from playing for lengthy periods, and often preventing her from being highly ranked. She suffered a two-year hiatus from competition in her early 20s, lost several months at the height of the 2005 season to an ankle injury, and lost the second half of 2007 to a rib injury.

Li started off the year in the 2011 Hong Kong Tennis Classic for the first time, as the leader of Asia Pacific Team. She lost her first match against the world number 1 Caroline Wozniacki but in the match for third place she won her second match against Venus Williams the 7-time Gram Slam winner.

She then participated in 2011 Medibank International Sydney as the #8 seed, making fast work with Australian wildcard Anastasia Rodionova 6–1, 6–2 and winning a tough three-set match against Virginie Razzano 6–4, 1–6, 6–4 in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals she met two time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova and came through with a 3–6, 7–6(4), 6–0 win. She defeated surprise qualifier Bojana Jovanovski in the semifinals 7–6(5), 6–3 to advance to her eighth WTA final.

Li faced World #3 Kim Clijsters in the final, and despite trailing 5-0 in the first set, Li would go on to defeat Clijsters 7-6, 6-3.

Li was the 9th seed at the 2011 Australian Open, where she reached her first Grand Slam singles final. On her way there, she ousted the No. 8 seed Victoria Azarenka in straight sets, 6-3 6-3. She then defeated world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals to reach her first Grand Slam final after saving a match point in the second set, 3–6 7–5 6–3. She became the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam singles final, facing No. 3 seed Kim Clijsters (whom she defeated at the Medibank International). Although Li claimed the first set, Clijsters was able to rally back and claim the championship, winning 3-6,6-3,6-3. Despite the loss, Li's ranking rose to a career high of World #7. Had she won, she would've ranked as World #5.
